The Process of making a Fez Case

The recipe calls for vegetable tanned, premium saddle quality cowhide.  9 ounce leather is just shy of 1/4 inch thick.  That's what I use for the rigid side of the case.  I wet and form the lid and bottom from 4 ounce cowhide.  Handles are also made of 4 ounce hide, and are laced up the back using premium leather lace.  For lasting strength I use 9 ounce scrap to make the fez case hinge and clasp.  

To keep your Fez centered and upright, also for a place to keep your jewels, etc., I make an internal leather cone mounted permanently to the rigid bottom.  The bottom is both glued and sewn inside the case body.  The body is meticulously hand stitched at the back, using about 20 feet of premium leather lace in what's called a "gaucho" woven lacing pattern.  The lining I now use is a gorgeous burgundy sueded material that is spectacular.  And the lids have a tooled "saucer" sewn on top, which has your name, office, shrine emblems, or whatever.

I use saddle-maker's professional dye and state of the art, environmentally safe finishes derived from bees wax made by Bee Natural Leathercare - it deeply penetrates and forms a durable, semi-gloss finish that can be easily touched up if it ever gets scuffed.  The idea is to let the case take the lickin' you don't want your expensive Fez to take.  And I will refinish or repair any Fez Case free of charge for the life of the owner regardless of what happened.  And of course any flaw in construction is totally guaranteed to be made right, forever.

The process takes time - about 35-40 hours to complete a Fez Case from scratch.  After materials and supplies, I figure I'm making about $8.00 per hour...  China and Mexico can't compete with me.

There are too many variables, options and ways to customize each unique Fez Case to make it practical for you to order via the internet.  We simply have to talk and exchange ideas, artwork, designs and so on.  I don't start until every detail is agreed upon, and sketches have been approved by you.  So we phone, fax, e-mail and snail mail, until we are satisfied.  You approve and send me a deposit, and away we go.  Sometimes I have to practice a design several times on scrap leather to get it right, so I charge a little extra for that degree of customization - just get me a sketch and I'll be able to tell you.

No less care is taken with every custom leather item we craft by hand, so  don't forget, I make just about any kind of leather item, or I'll attempt it anyway.
